Greenland : the west coast evacuated because of the strong waves

It is an earthquake which is at the origin of the strong waves. The west coast of Greenland had to be, this Sunday, partially evacuated because of violent waves, police said. “Large waves may break on Upernavik and its surroundings. The inhabitants of Nuugaatsiaq are going to be evacuated”, announced the police in Greenland on Facebook.

The waves particularly violent, have no doubt were caused by an earthquake of magnitude 4 on Saturday in the evening in Uummannaq, north of the arctic circle. “A good explanation is that the earthquake has created a fault at the origin of a tsunami”, said to the Danish agency Ritzau the meteorologist Trine Dahl Jensen, who did not exclude the possibility of aftershocks.

The police had made no mention of the victims

“This is abnormal, so great an earthquake in Greenland,” she said. The police in greenland had not Sunday in the morning spoke to the victims and assessed the damage. The local media KNR mentioned the “credible information relating to the dead and the wounded.” Autonomous territory of Denmark, the largest island in the world, Greenland has 55 000 inhabitants. This vast territory is located on the front line of the melting of the arctic ice, almost visible to the naked eye.
